Reflecting on one hundred years of conflicts, starting with the First World War, was the catalyst for this composition.  The title is from The sense of beauty being the outlines of aesthetic theory by George Santayana and published by Charles Scribner’s Sons in 1896.  Even after everything that has happened during this period humanity seems to have learnt very little from these catastrophes and the necessity to exert power by fighting continues today.  George Santayana seems to have had a good insight into the human condition.
