It's the question every certification candidate asks: how many practice questions is enough? 100? 500? 1,000? Here's the honest, experience-backed answer.
The number matters less than you think
There is no magic number. Someone who deeply reviews 200 questions will outperform someone who speed-runs 1,000. What matters is what you do with each question — especially the ones you get wrong.
That said, here are reasonable targets by exam:
- CompTIA A+ (both cores): 300–400
- CompTIA Network+: 250–350
- CompTIA Security+: 250–350
- Cisco CCNA: 200–300 + hands-on labs
These aren't quotas — they're the range where most prepared candidates land.
The 3-pass method
Pass 1 — Learn mode. Do questions by topic, untimed, immediately after studying each domain. Getting 60% here is fine. You're mapping what you don't know.
Pass 2 — Drill mode. Mixed questions, timed. For every wrong answer — and every lucky guess — read the full explanation and write down the concept in your own words. This is where the real learning happens. Most people need 2–3 rounds of this.
Pass 3 — Exam simulation. Full-length, timed, no interruptions. CompTIA gives you 90 questions in 90 minutes; practice under those exact conditions. If you're consistently scoring 85%+ in simulation, you're ready.
Quality beats quantity
A good practice question teaches you something even when you get it right. Look for:
- Full explanations, not just "B is correct." You need to know why the other options are wrong.
- Scenario-based wording that mirrors the real exam — CompTIA tests judgment, not definitions.
- PBQ-style items for Security+ and Network+ — drag-and-drop, ordering, and matching formats.
Avoid brain dumps — memorized questions from stolen exams. They'll get your certification revoked if CompTIA finds out, and they don't teach you anything anyway.
When you're ready (the checklist)
- Consistently scoring 85%+ on mixed timed sets
- Can explain every wrong answer without looking at notes
- Comfortable with the exam format (especially PBQs)
- Official exam objectives: every bullet feels familiar
If all four are true, stop studying and book the exam. Over-studying is real — confidence matters as much as knowledge on exam day.
Practice packs by exam

- CompTIA Network+ Practice Pack — 100 questions with explanations ($3)
- CompTIA Security+ Practice Pack — PBQ-style questions included ($3
- CompTIA Trifecta Bundle — all three exams, 390 questions ($14

Remember: the goal isn't to collect questions. It's to reach the point where the exam feels like a review of things you already know.
