How I Fell in Love with the Em Dash

There’s something magical about the em dash—it creates a little pause in your writing, a chance for your readers to truly savor your words. It’s a visual and stylistic tool that, when used properly, can highlight key ideas, offer clarity, and heighten suspense. I can’t help but sprinkle it liberally throughout my work.

Take, for example, this recent snippet I wrote:

Natalia stood in the small backroom of her flower shop. Surrounded by the comforting scents of roses and eucalyptus, she let out a slow breath as she studied the dress she had crafted. A striking red gown adorned with delicate hibiscus blooms, each petal hand-sewn with care, reminded her of everything she admired in the natural world—vibrancy, resilience, - beauty...

Here, the em dash after “world” does more than signal a simple aside. It lends a flourish, inviting readers to lean in for the final reveal: vibrancy, resilience—beauty. I love that small moment of anticipation. It’s a stylistic signpost that says, “Pay attention; I’m about to sum things up in a vivid, dramatic way.”

Why the Em Dash?

  1. Pacing and Rhythm: The em dash naturally changes the flow of a sentence, letting you slow down or linger on an important phrase.
  2. Versatility: It can replace commas, parentheses, or even a colon, allowing you to shape your sentences in unique ways.
  3. Emphasis: When you want to highlight a thought or amplify your point, an em dash works like a spotlight—shining on that moment for the reader.

Hearing the Dash

The attached audio version of my excerpt really brings the em dash to life. You can hear the slight pause, the gentle rise in tone. There’s a verbal drama in how we deliver that dash in speech—like a tiny gasp before the crucial phrase. If you ever want to test out whether an em dash is effective, try reading your sentence out loud and listen for the natural pause.
