How to Crochet a Rectangle or Square Base for Bags & Baskets

Beginner-friendly step-by-step tutorial

If you’ve ever wanted to crochet your own bag, basket, pouch or any structured project, the very first thing you need is a good, flat base. In this step-by-step video tutorial I show you how to crochet a clean, sturdy rectangle or square base that you can easily adapt to any size you want.

This blog post goes together with my YouTube video: I walk you through the same process, explain the logic behind it, and share extra tips so you can feel confident – even if you’re a complete beginner.

Why a good base matters

Crochet bags and baskets are a bit like houses: everything starts with the foundation.

A well-made base will:

  • help your bag stand nicely instead of collapsing,
  • make your baskets keep their shape,
  • give your corners a clean, crisp look,
  • and make the rest of the pattern easier to follow, because your stitch count is clear from the beginning.

Once you understand this base technique, you can reuse it again and again – for different bags, for storage baskets, for pouches, or even as a starting point for home decor projects.

What you’ll learn in the video

In the video, I guide you step by step through:

  • how to start your foundation for a rectangle or square,
  • how to keep your edges straight and your corners neat,
  • how to adjust the size of your base to fit your project,
  • how to count your stitches so everything stays symmetrical,
  • and how to turn this simple base into the start of a bag or basket.

The technique is beginner-friendly:

you don’t need to be an advanced crocheter. If you know how to hold your hook and yarn and you’re comfortable working in rows, you can make this.

Materials – what you can use

One of the best things about this technique is that it’s very flexible. You can choose:

  • Any yarn you like – cotton, rope yarn, wool blend, acrylic – depending on the final look you want.
  • A matching hook size recommended on your yarn label (or one that you personally prefer for a denser or looser fabric).

For bags and baskets, I personally love:

  • slightly thicker yarns or rope yarns for structure,
  • a tighter tension, so the fabric feels sturdy and not too floppy.

But the basic method is exactly the same even if you’re using a light yarn for a delicate pouch or a heavy rope for a shopper bag.

How to customise the size of your base

You can think of the rectangle or square base in two simple steps:

  1. Width – how wide you want your bag or basket to be.
  • This comes from the number of starting stitches (your foundation).
  1. Length – how long or deep you want the base.
  • This comes from the number of rows you crochet.

In practice, this means:

  • If you want a wider bag → start with more stitches in your foundation.
  • If you want a longer base → crochet more rows before you stop and move on to the body of the bag.
  • If you want a square → make sure the number of rows is approximately equal to the number of stitches in width, or simply measure the sides until they are the same.

You can keep a tape measure next to you and check:

  • “Does this match the width I want?”
  • “Is this deep enough for a base?”

Once you like the size, you know you’re ready to continue.

Tips for neat edges and corners

In the video, I also share little details that make a big difference in the finished look:

  • Consistent turning – turning your work the same way every time helps keep the edges straight.
  • Watching your first and last stitch – many beginners accidentally lose a stitch at the edge, which makes the base slowly narrower. I show how to avoid that.
  • Counting your stitches every few rows – it’s simple, but it saves you a lot of frustration later.
  • Enjoying the rhythm – once you find your flow, crocheting a base can be very relaxing and meditative.

Don’t worry if your first rectangle is not “perfect”. With every new base you crochet, your tension and edges will improve.

How this base connects to the next steps

This video is part of a small learning path.

Once you have mastered the flat rectangle or square base, you can move on to the next tutorial, where I show you how to build up the sides with a beautiful stitch.

So:

  1. This video + blog post = learn the base.
  2. Next video = learn how to continue upwards and transform the base into a real bag.

Step by step, you’ll understand not just what to do, but why it works.

Beginner-friendly but also useful for advanced crocheters

If you’re a beginner, this base will give you confidence.

If you’re more experienced, you can use this technique as a “blank canvas” for your own designs:

  • Change the stitch pattern on the base.
  • Play with color blocks or stripes.
  • Add a border around the base before you build up the sides.
  • Use it with different yarn weights for different effects.

The structure stays the same – only your creativity changes.

Want increases and decreases?

In this tutorial I focus on a simple, flat base that keeps the same width and length – perfect when you want a rectangular or square foundation.

If you’d like to explore:

  • bases that grow gradually,
  • shapes with increases or decreases,
  • or more complex constructions,

let me know in the comments or on my video – I’m always happy to create more detailed tutorials and explain the “why” behind the structure.
