When the Sales Are Slow: What Digital Creators Should Really Be Doing

Running a small digital download business sounds fun until you hit one of those weeks.

You know the kind. Views are coming in, people are favoriting your products, maybe they’re even adding items to their cart… but nobody is actually buying anything.

And honestly? That part can mess with your head a little.

As creators, we put a lot of ourselves into what we make. Whether it’s seamless patterns, PNGs, tumbler wraps, clipart, or mockups, every upload takes time, energy, creativity, and a piece of our attention span. So when sales slow down, it’s easy to start wondering if any of it is even worth it.

I struggle with that too.

Sometimes it feels impossible to keep creating when designs just get uploaded and buried under thousands of other listings online. Add in exhaustion, health issues, life stress, medications that make you tired, and suddenly your creative battery feels completely dead. You want to create… but your brain just says, “What’s the point?”

But here’s the thing I keep reminding myself:

Slow seasons are still part of building something.

Not every design is going to be the one that takes off. Not every upload is going to become a bestseller overnight. A lot of this business comes down to consistency, timing, learning trends, improving your skills, and simply staying in the game long enough for people to notice your work.

During slow periods, I try to stop focusing so hard on what isn’t happening and start focusing on what could happen next.

Instead of forcing myself to draw nonstop, I spend time researching ideas, watching trends, studying colors people are using, looking at upcoming holidays, and figuring out what might become popular next season. Sometimes creativity isn’t about producing constantly. Sometimes it’s about preparing.

And most importantly? I try really hard not to let the negative thoughts move in rent-free.

The thoughts that say:

“You’re wasting your time.”

“No one cares.”

“You’ll never make this work.”

Nah. Those thoughts don’t belong here.

Building a small business takes time. Especially in the digital world where everybody is fighting for attention. Some days will feel discouraging. Some days you’ll question yourself completely. But every creator you admire probably had those same moments too.

So if your shop is slow right now, don’t quit just because things are quiet.

Rest if you need to. Research if you need to. Reset your mind if you need to.

Then get back up and keep creating anyway.

Your next seller could literally be one upload away.
