5 Questions Every Photographer Should Ask Before a Photo Session

A great photography session starts long before you pick up the camera.

The more you know about your clients before their session, the easier it becomes to create photographs that feel personal, natural, and meaningful.

A simple client questionnaire can help you understand what your clients want, what makes them comfortable, and what matters most to them.

Here are five questions every photographer should consider asking before a session.

1. What Do You Want Your Photographs to Feel Like?

Clients often know the feeling they want even if they don’t know photography terminology.

They may describe their ideal photographs as:

• Natural and candid

• Romantic

• Fun and playful

• Classic

• Moody

• Bright and colorful

• Relaxed

• Editorial

Knowing this ahead of time gives you a much clearer idea of how to approach the session.

2. Are There Any Specific Photographs or Moments You Want Captured?

Every client has different priorities.

A parent may want a photograph of their children laughing together. A couple may want a quiet moment that feels intimate and natural. A family may want a photograph with a grandparent or beloved pet.

Asking this question helps make sure the moments that matter most don’t get overlooked.

3. Is There Anything You Don’t Want?

This question can be just as important as asking what the client does want.

Some clients may dislike certain poses, angles, or highly staged photographs. Others may have had a previous photography experience that made them uncomfortable.

Giving clients an opportunity to tell you what they would rather avoid can help create trust before the session even begins.

4. Is There Anything Sentimental You Would Like Included?

Small details can become some of the most meaningful photographs from a session.

That might include:

• A family heirloom

• A special piece of jewelry

• A child’s favorite toy

• Flowers

• A musical instrument

• A pet

• A meaningful vehicle

• An item connected to someone they love

These details can help turn a standard photography session into something much more personal.

5. How Comfortable Are You Being Photographed?

Not everyone feels relaxed in front of a camera.

Some clients are completely comfortable while others may feel nervous before the session even starts.

Knowing this in advance allows you to adjust how you direct them, how quickly you begin posing, and how much reassurance they may need.

Sometimes simply knowing that their photographer understands they’re nervous can make the entire experience easier.

Better Questions Create Better Client Experiences

A client questionnaire isn’t just paperwork.

It’s an opportunity to learn who you’re photographing before they ever step in front of your camera.

The right questions can help you:

• Prepare more effectively

• Personalize each session

• Make clients feel understood

• Reduce surprises on session day

• Capture photographs that mean more to your clients

And when clients have a better experience, they’re more likely to recommend you, leave a positive review, and return for future sessions.
