Privileged Bastard

Some time ago I asked people on Cara app to give me random words for inspiration. I got so many I probably have inspiration for life now! 😅

This is the second painting I made from the random words people gave me. When I was sketching this I didn't really think anything but during the painting process this tiger started to give me super narcissistic vibes. Like "Look at me, I have all the candy and you have none! Be jealous of me!"

I began to think about all the privileged people in power nowadays. I began to think about the state the whole world is in right now. These domino pieces are not just domino pieces. They represent the chain reaction that has already started. The chain reaction caused mainly by the privileged people who want all the candy they can get. They don't care if someone gets nothing. They don't care if the world soon can't provide no more. They just want everything and they want it now!

Just look at that stupid tiger! So arrogant! So annoying!

A colorful and surrealistic acrylic painting by Elina Salo. A tiger is laying in a pile of huge candy smiling arrogantly. There are domino pieces next to the tiger ready to fall in a chain and a huge planet in the red sky.

This is not the only painting of mine that has the subtext of the worry about our planet and its' future. If you look closer you can see these elements in many of my paintings. They're not too obvious but they're there.

A couple months ago I also got to talk about this in a local cultural magazine, Rohee. A picture of this article is below (text in Finnish).

Many of my paintings look bright and fun and if you look at them just once you might see only joy and happiness. But many of my paintings also tell a deeper story about the world and the problems we have nowadays.

Like this unicorn for example who's partying and having fun but is that actually good for them? They look a little sick to be honest and the drink with an atomic explosion doesn't look healthy.

There are mushroom clouds, toxic waste and skulls etc. in my other paintings too and they all tell a story about the wars in the world and the deteriorating of our planet and people ignoring all that by just concentrating on superficial things. The bright colors represent staying bright and happy on the outside while on the inside there's chaos and anxiety.

With my paintings I want to tackle these problems in my own way, with art. I don't want to make people feel guilty and depressed though. That's one reason why I use bright colors and humor a lot. But I hope my paintings could make people think about these deeper things too. Not with anxiety but with determination to do something about it.

There's still an option only to look at these paintings in a light and happy way. That's not wrong! Joy is also important and we really need that in today's world! 🩷🦄
