WHEN THE BLESSING BECOMES BAIT

By Prophetess Shantae | Refined Blog Series

“God told me to bless you…”

But now you’re acting funny. Distant. Entitled. Offended.

And what started as obedience has become manipulation.

Let’s talk about it.

🔥 The Problem?

Many believers are “sowing” from a place of lack—not from a place of lordship.

And because they’re led by need more than by obedience, the gift becomes guilt.

The seed becomes a snare.

And the blessing becomes bait.

🧠 Let’s Be Clear:

If God truly told you to bless someone, that means He—not they—is your source.

That means you should expect your reward from Him, not from who you gave it to.

That means your giving should not be tied to expectation, applause, or exchange.

🚫 Signs the Blessing Became Bait:

  • You expect them to “do something” in return (even if you never said it).
  • You feel offended when your generosity isn’t mentioned, reposted, or celebrated.
  • You’ve emotionally withdrawn because they didn’t “respond” the way you hoped.
  • You remind people (even subtly) of what you did for them.
  • You’re watching to see when the favor will flip back to you.

Let’s call it what it is: control cloaked in kindness.

💰 The Real Root: A Spirit of Lack

This isn’t always about greed. Sometimes it’s about pain.

When you’ve been overlooked, underpaid, or stuck in survival mode for so long, it’s easy to make money your god without even knowing it.

You start:

  • Giving to be noticed.
  • Sowing to be seen.
  • Helping to be honored.

But when lack leads you, even the most spiritual things get tainted with hidden motives.

📖 Bible Says:

“Give, and it will be given to you… For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”
— Luke 6:38 (ESV)

That verse doesn’t say the person you blessed is responsible for your harvest.

It says God will ensure the return—and His way might not look like your way.

🙏🏾 A Prayer for Purity:

“Lord, purify my heart when I give.
Help me sow from obedience, not expectation.
Heal every area in me still led by lack or fear.
I repent for attaching pressure to the gifts You told me to release.
Teach me to trust You with the return.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

🧭 Final Wisdom:

You can’t build Kingdom wealth with a manipulative heart.

You can’t lead with purity if you give with pressure.

In this refining season, God is correcting our relationship with money, service, and obedience. He’s maturing us as leaders and deliverers—so we don’t become manipulators in disguise.

If the seed was pure, the return will be sure.

Just don’t let your blessing become bait.
