Misinformation about dyslexia can delay diagnosis and support. Here's what the evidence actually says.
Myth
"Dyslexic children just see letters backwards."
Reality
Dyslexia is primarily about difficulty processing the sounds in language (phonological processing) — reversing letters is just one occasional symptom, and many children without dyslexia do it too in early years.
Myth
"They'll grow out of it if they just read more."
Reality
Dyslexia is a lifelong neurological difference. It responds very well to structured, explicit literacy support — but practice alone without the right approach often leads to frustration, not progress.
Myth
"It only affects reading — not writing or maths."
Reality
Dyslexia can also affect spelling, written expression, working memory, and sometimes numeracy. It shows up differently in every child.
Myth
"Smart kids can't be dyslexic."
Reality
Dyslexia has nothing to do with intelligence. It occurs across the full IQ range — and many dyslexic individuals have exceptional strengths in reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving.
