Finding Paradise: Why You Should Ignore the Rumours About Barbados

INSIDER SECRETS: TRAVEL TIPS

Finding Paradise: Why You Should Ignore the Rumours About Barbados

When I planned my solo trip to Barbados, I was hit with a wave of warnings: "The construction noise is deafening," "Avoid the beaches on Sundays," and "Watch out for the mosquitoes."

After visiting five different beaches across the island, I can tell you the truth: Don't listen to the fear-mongering. If you are looking for a quiet, non-tourist paradise, it’s waiting for you—you just need to know where to look.

1. The "Construction" Myth

There is a lot of talk about the noise from the new Sandals Resort development. While the work is definitely happening, here is the secret: it’s incredibly localized. Once you walk just a short distance away from the site, the noise and the cranes completely vanish. You’re left with nothing but stunning white sand and calm, crystal-clear water.

2. Sunday is Actually the Best Day

I was told to stay away from the beach on Sundays because it’s "local day" and would be overcrowded. That was another lie! I found it to be quiet, peaceful, and incredibly safe. The water was warm, and the vibe was nothing but tranquil.

3. Early Bird Gets the Paradise

By 7 am, the temperature was already a balmy 29°C. If you want to swim in peace, get there early. One tip: leave the flimsy parasol at home. It gets windy enough that a standard umbrella won't stay put, and honestly, at that hour, the sun is just perfect.

4. My Top Solo Travel Tips for Barbados if you’re heading out as a solo traveller, here is what I learned the hard way:

Skip the Taxis: Hire a car. Taxis are expensive, and unfortunately, the "tourist tax" is real—prices often jump the moment they hear a UK accent. Having your own car gives you the freedom to find those hidden spots without the haggle.

The Mosquito Situation: I was told I couldn’t bring repellent through security at Heathrow—not true! I brought mine through with no issues. Even in the dry season, I smothered myself in it just in case, and I didn't get bitten once.

Avoid the Crowds: If you want a "real" beach, look for spots with no sunbeds, no snorkeling tours, and no cruise ships in sight. That is where you’ll find the true Barbados.

The Verdict

My advice to any solo traveller is this: See it for yourself. Don’t let the online comments worry you. Look after yourself as you would in any country, stay aware, and enjoy the paradise. I’ll definitely be going back—I’ll just be picking up my rental car keys at the airport next time!

Happy travels! 🏖🇧🇧☀️
