“But there was always the curious mental phenomenon that parallel with our sound reasoning there inevitably ran some insanely trivial excuse for taking the first drink. Our sound reasoning failed to hold us in check. The insane idea won out. Next day we would ask ourselves, in all earnestness and sincerity, how it could have happened.” - Pg. 37 of the Big Book- More About Alcoholism
I always say that we alcoholics/addicts don’t have an inner child, but an inner addict begging to get that first fix, pill, or drink again. We find excuses, we create excuses, we learn to excuse our thinking about excuses..WOW are we good at that. Then when we finally begin living by principle with the 12 Steps in our arsenal of recovery, something insane pops up from deep within our lizard brain and we don’t have the defenses we need, unless we have a Higher Power of some sort.
So when lizard brain comes up with a great idea about any mind affecting chemical, your only defense will be some sort of Higher Power that prevents it. Your inner addict is a base instinct always lurking inside is your addicted lizard brain. What they present to you are NOT presents.
There will always come a time when the only defense against inner addict lizard brain will be your connection to your Higher Power. May you find Him (Her, It, They) now.
