A correctional officer in Southwest Virginia lost his life Monday morning following what officials with the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) described as a violent assault involving an incarcerated individual.
The incident occurred at River North Correctional Center in Independence, Virginia shortly before 8 a.m.
VADOC identified the officer as 40-year-old Jeremy Lewis Hall, who had been with the department since April 2024.
VADOC Director Chad Dotson released a statement expressing deep condolences, noting that Officer Hall’s death is being felt throughout the agency, across the Commonwealth, and among correctional professionals nationwide. He emphasized that their thoughts remain with Officer Hall’s family, friends, and the staff at River North.
Two other officers were injured during the incident. Both received medical care and have since been released.
VADOC reported that the facility is now secure, and the incident is under active investigation.
