Why 'Psaltery and Harp'?

You may be wondering why this shop is called 'Psaltery and Harp'. Well, there are several reasons!

Firstly, the phrase comes from Psalm 150 verse 3 in the Authorised Version of the Bible (also known as the King James Version):

Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.

Secondly, these instruments (along with many others) have been part of my life for as long as I can remember. My parents were involved with the amateur Early Music revival in the 1970s and 80s, first playing with The Canterbury Waits and later forming The Pierpoint Troubadours, which my sister and I also played with as soon as we were old enough!

The psaltery and harp in the logo are illustrations of a psaltery made by my dad and a medieval 'gothic' harp made by the late George Higgs, a family friend. My mum played both these instruments (as well as the Irish harp, recorders, flutes, crumhorns and pipe and tabour) and when I was eight I decided I wanted to learn to play the harp too. I started playing on a lever harp that was also built by my dad, before moving on to learn the pedal harp.

Finally, 'Psaltery' is an nod to the hymn resource website hymnary.org. I hope my psalm resources will be similarly useful!
