Mercury Cougar
The Mercury Cougar was conceived in the early 1960s as Mercury’s upscale alternative to the Ford Mustang, initially part of the T-7 project after the Mustang’s success. Lincoln-Mercury aimed to create a car that combined pony car excitement with personal luxury, positioned between the Mustang and the Thunderbird in terms of comfort and features.
The Cougar name was chosen over alternatives like Mercury Apollo after marketing studies found it more evocative for buyers

The Mercury Cyclone debuted in 1964 as the Mercury Comet Cyclone, designed as the performance-oriented version of the Mercury Comet It shared its platform with the Ford Fairlane and featured a 289-cubic-inch (4.7-liter) V8 engine producing 210 hp, with a three-speed manual transmission standard and an optional automatic.
The 1965 Cyclone Sport introduced a fastback body style and a four-speed manual, enhancing its sporty appeal.
