November Morning in Amsterdam

Hey fellow rucker!

I just wrapped up this 8 km Amsterdam landmarks loop this morning (Nov 10, 2025) with a 15 kg pack, and it’s perfect for anyone who loves mixing history with a solid workout. I’m breaking it down step-by-step so you can follow my exact footprints—boots-on-the-ground style. Grab your pack, lace up, and let’s go!

Quick Gear Check (What I Used Today)

• Pack: 15 kg (10-20% bodyweight rule)

• Shoes: Trail runners with grippy lugs (cobblestones + frost = no slips)

• Extras: Soft flask in shoulder strap, anti-chafe balm, lightweight rain shell

Your Amsterdam Rucking Route – 8 km Loop

Start/Finish: Amsterdam Centraal Station (main entrance, south side)

Pace Goal: 4–4.5 km/h (drop to 3.5 km/h on bridges or crowds)

Total Time: ~1 hr 45 min (with micro-stops)

Segment 1: Centraal → Dam Square (0.5 km | 10 min)

Path: Exit station → straight down Damrak (wide pavement) → Dam Square

Landmarks: Royal Palace (your first photo stop), National Monument

Ruck Tip: Use this as your warm-up. Keep strides short, shoulders relaxed. Roll your shoulders every 2 minutes to settle the pack.

Segment 2: Dam Square → Spui (0.8 km | 15 min)

Path: South past Nieuwe Kerk → down Kalverstraat (pedestrian street) → Spui

Vibe: Coffee smells, early shoppers, gabled rooftops

Ruck Tip: Cinch that hip belt tight—this long stretch of hard pavement is where pack shift sneaks up on you.

Segment 3: Spui → Nine Streets (0.5 km | 10 min)

Path: Duck into Begijnhof (hidden courtyard—quiet AF) → exit west into De Negen Straatjes

Landmarks: Oldest wooden house in AMS, boutique cheese shops

Ruck Tip: Heel balm check! Cobblestones start here. Shorten your stride on the uneven bits.

Segment 4: Nine Streets → Anne Frank House (1.0 km | 20 min)

Path: South along Prinsengracht canal (houseboats + golden gables) → Westerkerk → Anne Frank House

Soundtrack: Church bells at 9:15 AM (use it to check pace)

Ruck Tip: Hydrate every 20 min—soft flask in shoulder strap = no pack-off stops.

Segment 5: Anne Frank House → Leidseplein (1.5 km | 30 min)

Path: Northwest through Jordaan alleys → Brouwersgracht (prettiest canal) → Leidseplein

Vibe: Local bakeries, hidden courtyards, drawbridges

Ruck Tip: Shoulder rolls every 1 km—do them on Brouwersgracht’s long straightaway. Saved my traps!

Segment 6: Leidseplein → Museum Quarter (1.0 km | 20 min)

Path: East into Vondelpark (gravel paths) → past Picasso’s Fish → exit to Museumplein

Landmarks: “I amsterdam” letters (if they’re back), Rijksmuseum towers

Ruck Tip: Park paths = recovery zone. Loosen hip belt slightly, let blood flow.

Segment 7: Museum Quarter → Centraal (2.7 km | 50 min)

Path: North past Rijksmuseum → along Herengracht & Keizersgracht → cross Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) → back to station

Challenge: Final 500 m has a sneaky incline + bridge steps

Ruck Tip: Mental game: Treat Rijksmuseum as “75% done” marker. Push through—coffee at Centraal tastes earned.
