Purchasing Your First Tarot Deck

Purchasing your first tarot deck

One of the most common questions I am asked by people interested in learning more about the tarot is, "Can I purchase my first deck?"--The answer is YES!

Below we bust the myth of having to be gifted your first tarot deck, how to make the most out of your investment in your first deck purchase, accessories you may want to consider and care and storage for your new deck.

You can purchase your first deck!

The idea that it is necessary for you to be gifted your first divination deck originates in cultural and/or old occult traditions, but there is nothing wrong with deciding you would like to learn the tarot and purchasing your own deck. Personally, I obtained my first deck, The Forest of Enchantment Tarot in a subscription box, but purchased a Rider Waite Smith deck to study and train with. In all honesty, I never used that initial deck that showed up in the mail and have been a dedicated Rider Waite Smith reader from the very beginning.

Purchasing your deck

If you have decided to purchase your own deck, congratulations! Now the fun begins! We are going to talk about available options to purchase, what to look for and other accessories you may want to consider.

Places to buy

Amazon:

Pros--very large selection and can see many different publishers in one place

Cons--there is unfortunately a counterfeit market and you could be purchasing a deck that has not been created by the original author and designers. There is also the issue of not being able to view the deck before purchasing. So you may get a deck and then need to return it. Thankfully Amazon has a no questions asked return policy.

Local Metaphysical Shop:

Pros--You get to support a small local business--Yay! You also have a bit more interaction with the shop owners and can work together to get some advisement on what kind of deck you are shopping for. Depending on the shop, you may be able to view the cards with available sample decks.

Cons--Selection will be limited to what is on hand at the shop

Bookstore (Barnes & Noble):

Pros--May have a larger selection of decks to choose from in comparison to a local metaphysical shop.

Cons--Lack of personalized service or assistance with choosing the decks. Sample decks will not be available.

USGames or Llewellyn:

Pros--purchase directly from the manufacturer; they often run sales and special discounts.

Cons--shipping can add up. see some sample cards online but not all of them

Etsy:

Pros--Lots of independent designers to support and choose from. You can shop for a deck that matches your unique personality and style. Ability to contact shop owners and ask questions before purchasing.

Cons--Just like Amazon, you run the risk of purchasing counterfeit decks. Shipping can get lengthy and expensive if you are purchasing from overseas.

So did I purchase my first deck? My answer is, "it's complicated". Yes, I paid for the subscription box, but the Universe chose the path of the tarot for me and I had to willingly accept. Looking back, that was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
