Normalising the idea of taking risks in our 20s: Tips from a 23 year old who just quit his job

Hello chaps, don't let this year just pass on by. Waiting for success to tap you on the shoulder is not the answer. Let's talk about taking charge, making bold decisions, and actually doing the things we want to do! As you may have heard before... "Tomorrow isn't promised". - Let that sink in.

I’m 23, living at home in Kent, so I feel very fortunate to be able to take more risks. Which is why I decided to quit my job this year and continue to build my enterprise. This has been my plan for the past 4 years since leaving school and I'm very grateful to finally be taking the next big step towards my goals!

My aim is to share what I have learned, and done to get myself to this stage in my life. Hoping it could help as many of you as possible. After reading this article, I would really appreciate your support, views and takes of what I've discussed here today so that I can bring more value to you as possible. Thanks, TG.

Without further ado, let's start with:

1. Decide Who You Want to Be

First and foremost, chaps, figure out who you want to be—not who your parents want, not who your mates expect, and certainly not who social media says you should be. Imagine your future self. Is he a well-dressed entrepreneur, an artist living in Notting Hill, or perhaps a philanthropist jetting off to Monaco?

The secret here is to align your goals with your values. A chap without values is like a yacht without a rudder: flashy but directionless.

Take Action:

  • Spend a weekend journaling or meditating on your aspirations.
  • Write down three non-negotiables for the man you want to become—e.g., “I value honesty, I stay fit, I live life on my terms.”

2. Your Career Is Your Canvas

Ah, the great conundrum: work to live or live to work? Look, I’m not saying everyone needs to hustle their way to a billion-pound IPO, but do invest time in finding a career or passion that lights a fire in your belly. Your 20s are your playground—experiment, take risks, and don’t fear failure.

If you’re not quite there yet, don’t sweat it. A job isn’t just a paycheck; it’s a stepping stone. Work hard, learn the ropes, and build connections. Before you know it, you’ll be carving your own path.

Take Action:

  • Network like it’s your new favourite sport. Attend events, slide into DMs, and always have a business card on hand.
  • Take courses to upskill. Learning something new will make you stand out.

3. Surround Yourself With the Right People

You know what they say: you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with. Gentlemen, this is not the time for dead weight. Find mates who inspire you, challenge you, and bring value to your life.

I’ll be blunt: toxic relationships—whether they’re romantic, platonic, or professional—will hold you back faster than a bad investment in crypto.

Take Action:

  • Join clubs or communities where like-minded gents hang out.
  • Distance yourself from anyone who drains your energy or undermines your dreams.

4. Manage Your Finances Like a Pro

Nothing says “man with a plan” like having your finances sorted. Start investing, save diligently, and spend wisely. Yes, I know that new watch is tempting, but think long-term. A gentleman plans for his future, ensuring he has the freedom to enjoy life on his terms.

Take Action:

  • Start a high-interest savings account or an investment portfolio.
  • Budget your lifestyle—split your income into essentials, luxuries, and savings.

5. Health Is Wealth

Look, lads, I don’t care how good you think you look now; if you’re not taking care of your body, it’ll catch up with you. Exercise, eat well, and for heaven’s sake, sleep properly. No all-nighter is worth a lifetime of feeling sluggish.

Take Action:

  • Hit the gym or try something fun like boxing or Pilates.
  • Plan meals with intention—less Uber Eats, more homemade goodness.

6. Take Risks, But Be Calculated

Here’s the truth: you’ll never achieve greatness by playing it safe. Whether it’s starting a business, moving to a new city, or asking that girl out, embrace the art of calculated risk. Be brave, but be smart.

Take Action:

  • Say yes to opportunities that scare you.
  • Set aside time to evaluate potential risks and rewards before diving in.

7. Celebrate the Small Wins

Finally, don’t be so focused on the big picture that you forget to enjoy the journey. A glass of champagne after landing a new client, a toast to finishing that course—these little moments matter. Celebrate them.

Take Action:

  • Keep a journal to track progress and accomplishments.
  • Reward yourself for milestones, no matter how small.

Final Thoughts

Being in your 20s is like standing at the gates of the finest private club in the world. The only catch? You’re the one deciding who gets to walk through. Take ownership of your decisions, live intentionally, and make this year the one where you turn dreams into action.
