Australian Author Creates Fantasy Novel to Bridge the Gap Between Middle Grade and Young Adult
When Australian author Tenille Seow picked up a popular young adult fantasy novel in 2023, she expected to be swept into the story. Instead, she found herself struggling with difficult character names, strong language, and mature content that didn’t feel appropriate for younger readers. ‘I remember thinking—I would never let my daughter read this,’ Seow says. “And I wondered how many other parents felt the same.”
That moment sparked an idea: what if there were a book that sat comfortably between middle grade and young adult fiction—one that still offered magic, tension, and romance, but without explicit content? Seow decided to write it herself. ‘I wanted to create something exciting and magical, but also something parents could feel comfortable with.’
The Light Within: The Aura Academy of Magic introduces readers to seventeen-year-old Alice Morgan, whose ordinary life is turned upside down by forces far beyond her control. Alice is drawn into a hidden world shaped by the powerful Nobles, rulers of Optimum, whose control has gone unquestioned—until now. As Alice navigates this new reality, she is pulled between two boys—Drake York and Beau Campbell, who both want to protect her.
The Light Within is designed for readers transitioning into young adult fiction. The novel features diverse characters, a classic love triangle, mild fantasy violence, and gentle romance—offering a compelling story without explicit content.
