Locked In: How to Stay Consistent in Your Walk With God

There was a season in my life when prayer felt effortless. I’d wake up before the sun, open my Bible, and linger in His presence for hours. Prayer wasn’t something I “did”, it was who I was.

But seasons change.

One morning, I woke up and realized my quiet time felt rushed. Prayer felt mechanical and reading my Bible became a part of my checklist. The noise of life had quietly crept in. And I found myself scrolling on Instagram instead of leaning into Him.

If this has happened to you, you’re not failing. You’re experiencing something nearly every believer does—a slow drift away from intimacy with God.

The truth is: staying consistent isn’t about having more discipline. It’s about protecting your heart, guarding your attention, and building a rhythm of presence.

Why We Drift

Drifting doesn’t come from laziness. It comes from distraction.

Life is full. Work, family, maintaining your social life, endless notifications. We tell ourselves, “Later. I’ll pray later. I’ll read later.” But later rarely comes.

Instead, we connect with God in fragments—a verse before bed, a worship song on the commute, scrolling Christian quotes online. Those moments matter. But they aren’t enough to deepen intimacy.

True intimacy with God requires intentional presence, not sporadic connection. It’s the difference between knowing someone superficially and knowing them deeply. Imagine trying to build closeness with a friend or a partner but only interacting when you happen to see a reminder or a post from them online. You’re aware of each other, but you’re not truly connected.

The same is true with God.

What True Intimacy Looks Like

James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

But that draw isn’t passive. It’s a choice. God isn’t asking to fit into your schedule, He’s waiting for you to invite Him into the rhythm of your life.

Here’s what I’ve learned: intimacy with God is like longing for someone whose presence changes everything. It’s creating space so He’s not just another part of your day, but the center of it.

Here is how to anchor your heart and rebuild consistency with God:

  • Set a small daily prayer time: even five minutes in the morning or before bed. Start with a simple gratitude list or one short prayer. Over time, this will grow into a deeper habit. (For guided steps on how to strengthen your prayer life, check out the Prayer Power Playbook here.)
  • Choose one Scripture to focus on each week: write it down and revisit it daily. Let it shape your thoughts and prayers.
  • Create a sacred space: a corner in your home or a moment in your day where you intentionally remove distractions. It could be your morning coffee, your commute, or a quiet night before sleep.
  • Limit phone and social media time: even 10 minutes less a day creates space for God’s presence. Replace it with prayer, worship music, or Scripture reading.
  • Invite God into everyday moments: while cooking, cleaning, or walking. Speak His name, thank Him, or pray silently so your life becomes prayer itself.

When these practices become part of your daily life, intimacy with God shifts from being a discipline to becoming your lifestyle.
