Overcoming Procrastination

Strategies for Boosting Productivity

What is procrastination?

Procrastination is the act of postponing or delaying tasks or actions that we should do. It not only leads us to put off tasks or work that we need to do, but it can also lead us to completely avoid projects and/or tasks that may be important. Procrastination is often confused with laziness or apathy and not only generates guilt, insecurity, and stress but also interferes with our personal growth.

If you identify with what has been said so far, don't worry, you are not alone, procrastination affects many people. However, there are effective techniques available that can help overcome this habit.

In this blog, we will explore the concept of procrastination, its underlying causes, and how Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) can be valuable tools to address it head-on.

What are the causes of procrastination?

I don't believe we can explain the causes of procrastination without referring to the subconscious mind, as it plays a leading role in our decisions and behaviours. Our subconscious mind stores and processes our experiences, emotions, and beliefs. While some emotions can be easily recognised and consciously experienced, others may operate at a deeper level and have a subconscious influence on our emotional state and behaviours. Our experiences, traumas, cultural values, the society we live in, and our learnings create patterns of thinking and behaviour.

The repetition of thoughts or behaviours creates neural connections that are responsible for our automatic reactions. We experience this clearly when we perform actions automatically, such as driving a vehicle or certain daily rituals that we repeatedly do without thinking.

A fundamental tool for addressing procrastination from the subconscious mind is to address the underlying causes and learn and apply strategies. The practice of awareness and self-reflection can help us identify the subconscious patterns that lead us to procrastinate.

Because we are individual beings and think and act in different ways, the influence of the subconscious mind on procrastination is different for each of us.

Here are some examples:

  • Thought and behaviour patterns: The subconscious clings to what is familiar and comfortable because it is deeply ingrained. If procrastination has been present in our lives for a long time, it is very likely that we have thought and behaviour patterns deeply rooted in our subconscious.
  • Distractions: It goes without saying that social media, headlines, online videos, etc., offer an escape and immediate gratification, becoming the perfect excuse to distance ourselves from tasks we don't enjoy doing and therefore lead us to procrastinate.
  • Fear of failure: Often, we postpone certain tasks due to an underlying fear of criticism or failure. This may originate from past experiences or learned models in childhood.
  • Fear of success: Yes, although it may be hard to believe, fear of success exists. Our subconscious can block success out of fear of the changes it may bring. Paradoxical but true.
  • Perfectionism: Striving for excellence can create emotional barriers that foster procrastination. Not meeting the expectations of perfection generates stress, triggering our subconscious defence mechanism, which can lead us to postpone tasks indefinitely.

How can we overcome procrastination?

To overcome procrastination, it is essential to address the underlying causes and develop effective strategies.

Here are some tools that you can easily implement:

  • Identify your emotional triggers and negative thought patterns and reframe them.
  • Use time management techniques: There are various time management techniques, but most involve dividing time into blocks of work and rest, and/or classifying and prioritising tasks based on their urgency and importance.
  • Develop an action plan: Once goals have been established, having a structure that includes the steps to follow helps you avoid distractions and stay focused.
  • Set realistic desired outcomes and deadlines: Clear and achievable desired outcomes help maintain motivation.
  • Identify and minimise distractions: Find a specific time and place to work, eliminating phone notifications and other devices can be very helpful.
  • Develop self-regulation skills: This allows us to recognise our environment and regulate our emotional responses.
  • Visualise the end results and the satisfaction of completing the task to generate motivation and minimise initial resistance.

What are the benefits of Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) for overcoming procrastination?

Some practices such as hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), seek to access and work with the subconscious mind to identify and reframe emotional blocks, modify unwanted thought and behaviour patterns, and promote personal growth.

Benefits of Hypnotherapy:

Hypnotherapy allows access to the subconscious mind through a state of deep relaxation, enabling us to access our internal resources to reprogramme negative patterns. In the specific context of procrastination, hypnotherapy can address underlying blocks, increase self-confidence, and enhance motivation.

Benefits of NLP:

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) focuses on the association of language, thoughts, and behaviours. It also uses techniques to reframe thought patterns and beliefs that may hinder our personal growth. In the specific case of procrastination, NLP can help change our perception of tasks to be done. Some NLP techniques include reframing, anchoring, and modelling to develop new neural connections that promote productive habits.

Different methods work for different individuals, so the key is to experiment with various approaches and adapt them to your needs and personal preferences. The crucial aspect is to discover the method that resonates with you the most and empowers you to enhance your efficiency and productivity in your day-to-day activities.
