"Kirkbride turns up the dial on the absurdist dada elements that have always adorned the edges of the Starlinesque superheroic space opera, a sub-sub genre dear to my heart.
Artist Vassilis Gogtilas is a new (to me) voice in the Sienkiewicz, Keith, and McKeever school of virtuosic comic book chiaroscuro. It's an aesthetic with its roots firmly planted in the '80s, somewhere between Bill Plympton's work and the liner note drawings of Pink Floyd's The Wall.
Vassilis has carved out his own unique space within that tradition, fully formed and fully realized. This is no small task. Amid all the flinging ink and chaotic spatter there is a remarkable narrative clarity. His line is equally adept at light sourcing and down and dirty capital 'C' cartooning. There are moments of illustrative beauty amid the anarchic inky showmanship.
