Tidying is about creating a space that Sparks Joy ❤️ Marie Kondo emphasises more than just tidying up, she encourages a mindset shift that centers around joy and mindfulness.
These are my personal notes based on what I learned from watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. I’ve summarised the key steps and methods she teaches to help declutter and organize your home in a way that sparks joy. I highly suggest you also watch the series which can be found on Netflix the use these points as a guide.
Feel free to use this as a guide to start your own tidying journey!
(Refer to the Additional Notes section at the end!) Then, you can start completing the tasks one by one, checking off each one as you go.
Clothes 👕
✔️ Gather all clothes into one pile.
✔️ Ask yourself: Does this bring me joy? If not, thank it and give it away.
✔️ Consider if it’s something you’d want in your future.

Socks & Underwear 🧦
Lay the socks flat on top of each other, Place one sock over the other to align them.
✔️ Fold in thirds (for long socks) – Fold the toe section up toward the middle, then fold the top section down to create a small, compact rectangle.
✔️ For ankle socks, fold in half or thirds – Since they’re smaller, you may only need one or two folds.
✔️ Stand them upright – Store them vertically in a drawer so you can see all your socks at a glance, rather than stacking them on top of each other.
✔️ For underwear fold by tucking in the sides, then stacking neatly.
-------------------------------------------------
Shoes 👟
✔️ Use shoe racks to organise.
✔️ Arrange in a way that sparks joy e.g., lighter colors on top.

Additonal Notes
✨ Tidy by Category, Not Location
Instead of tidying room by room, Marie suggests tackling categories (like clothes, books, papers, etc.) all at once. This helps you see the total amount of each item you own, which makes it easier to let go of things that don’t spark joy.
✨ Start with Clothes
Marie always recommends starting with clothes because they’re typically the least emotionally charged. This helps you build momentum for the rest of the process.
✨ Be Mindful of Sentimental Items
When it comes to sentimental items, she encourages taking time to honor them before letting go. You can thank them for the memories they’ve provided, then release them with gratitude.
✨ The “Spark Joy” Test
Hold each item and ask yourself, Does this spark joy? If the answer is no, then thank it for its service and let it go. Trust your feelings and intuition when deciding.
✨ Declutter in One Go
Marie Kondo believes it’s best to complete the decluttering process in a short, concentrated burst, rather than spreading it out over time. This way, the changes are more transformative and impactful.
✨ Don’t Overcomplicate Folding
Marie’s folding method isn’t just for clothes, it’s about creating a tidy, peaceful space. She advocates folding items into compact, standing shapes so you can see everything you own, without digging through piles.
✨ Keep Only What You Truly Love
By letting go of things that don’t bring joy, you create space for what you truly love and use. Marie emphasizes that tidying isn’t about discarding, it’s about making space for the things that matter most.
