Travel Truths: 12 Honest Lessons You Learn on the Road (That No One Tells You)

Travel looks dreamy on Instagram, dreamy beaches, quiet “hidden gems” and sometimes cheap flight deals that seem too good to pass up. But once you start exploring the world more deeply, you realise not everything goes as planned… and not everything is as it seems.

This post is part of my Travel Truths Series: a reality check for travellers who want to plan smarter, travel better and avoid the common mistakes we’ve all made!

1.  Budget Airlines Aren’t Always Cheaper

Sure, that €19.99 flight looks tempting (lucky those who are still finding them). But once you add:

  • Cabin baggage fees;
  • Seat selection;
  • Airport transfers (budget airlines often use far-away airports);
  • Snacks and drinks on board;
  • ... you might end up paying more than another airline.

Tip: Always compare the final price and consider time + comfort (especially for long haul flights) when deciding.

2.  “Hidden Gems” Are Usually Not That Hidden

If it’s all over TikTok or Instagram… it’s probably not a secret anymore. And once a spot goes viral, expect:

  • Crowds;
  • Queues;
  • Inflated prices;
  • Locals getting frustrated.

Tip: Visit early in the morning or explore lesser-known nearby towns instead.

3. The Cheapest Option Isn’t Always the Smartest

Booking the cheapest hostel or apartment may mean:

  • Bad locations;
  • Noisy nights;
  • Lack of cleanliness or safety.

Tip: Consider value, not just price. Sometimes paying €20 more means better sleep, less commuting and a safer experience.

4. Instagram Isn’t Reality

That perfect photo? It was likely taken at 6am, with editing, cropping and a lot of patience. The reality often includes:

  • Huge crowds;
  • Trash nearby (outside the frame);
  • Long queues just for the shot.

Tip: Don’t travel just for the gram. Experience the moment beyond the photos.

5. Overpacking Will Slow You Down

Many travellers think they need options “just in case.” The result? Lugging around a 20kg suitcase for a 5-day trip.

Tip: Pack outfits that mix and match and do laundry halfway through your trip if needed.

6. You Can’t Do Everything in One Trip

Trying to see everything often leads to burnout. Fast-paced itineraries leave no room for:

  • Spontaneity;
  • Rest;
  • Genuine connection with a place.

Tip: Slow down. Less is more. Prioritise quality over quantity.

7. Weather Isn’t Always Like the Travel Brochures

Just because you booked “dry season” doesn’t mean it won’t rain (we experienced this in many Asiatic countries). Climate change has made weather patterns less predictable.

Tip: Always pack a light rain jacket or umbrella and don’t let bad weather ruin your trip. Some of the best experiences happen when plans change.

8. Locals Aren’t Your Tour Guides

While many locals are kind, not everyone is waiting to help tourists. Sometimes:

  • They don’t speak your language;
  • They’re busy;
  • Tourist fatigue is real.

Tip: Learn a few words in the local language, always be respectful and never assume help is guaranteed.

9. Tourist Traps Aren’t Always Bad

Not everything popular is automatically “inauthentic.” Sometimes touristy places are well-known for a reason: they’re beautiful, historic, or delicious!

Tip: Balance it out, enjoy the big sights and explore the less popular neighbourhoods.

10. Star Ratings Don’t Mean the Same Globally

A “4-star” hotel in one country may feel like a 2-star elsewhere. Star systems aren’t consistent worldwide.

Tip: Always read recent reviews, not just look at ratings.

11. Having Internet Access is a Game Changer

Relying on public Wi-Fi can be frustrating. You’ll waste time looking for signal or directions when you need them most.

Tip: Get a local SIM or eSIM with data or use Google Maps offline, download areas in advance. We use Airalo for the E-sim, you can use my code: DEBORA4778 for a €3 discount.

12. Flexibility is Your Superpower

Flights get delayed. Trains are cancelled. Attractions close unexpectedly. Getting stressed won’t help.

Tip: Leave space in your schedule and embrace unexpected detours, they often become the best stories.
