Story

Sophie was walking briskly to work while replying to messages in a WhatsApp group. She was so caught up in the conversation that she didn't even notice the hole in the sidewalk ahead. By the time she realized, it was too late—she twisted her ankle and fell awkwardly to the ground.

Still trying to process what had happened, she sat on the sidewalk, holding her ankle with both hands as the pain throbbed. A young man who was passing by noticed the situation and rushed over, concerned:

— Miss, are you okay?!

— I think I broke my foot… — Sophie replied, embarrassed, unsure whether the pain or the shame was worse.

A few minutes later, an ambulance arrived, and the paramedics carefully helped her inside. Once at the emergency room, she explained everything to the doctor, including the fact that she had broken the same foot before.

The diagnosis didn’t take long, and Sophie was soon taken to get an SLWC. As the doctor finished applying the cast, she commented:

— This one feels heavier than the last time…

Sitting in a wheelchair while waiting for the cast to dry, Sophie looked down at her new white, heavy boot, remembering that she still had a pair of crutches stored at home.
