Barb has been enjoying great summer time drinks and food with family members and friends at her new favourite local coffee shop, the Boxcar. This small coffee shop and cafe is a charming addition to the Calder community, providing work for students and locals, a wonderful private patio area to enjoy and a small but mighty menu with amazing deserts, gourmet sandwiches and coffees and cold drinks that are almost too beautiful to drink! Folks love to photograph them and you can see the variety of them on social media!
On one of her visits, Barb struck up a conversation with owner and entrepreneur Jesse Watson, who shared his story of how he started this small business, and his plans to beautify the neighbourhood he grew up in and make it a destination for others. He lamented about the old power poles that the City left in place when they recently did a new street beautification proje
ct along 129 avenue. The old poles really needed a facelift or perhaps a coat of paint. Barb shared her vision of an underwater yarny sea creature art installation for one of the poles, and Jesse was captivated, you might even say hooked! He asked for her help to get something in place for Boxcar's 2nd anniversary party, which took place on July 26th, 2025.
The rest is history. Many thanks to Cynthia, Mario and Dianne who helped with the installation, and to all our friends who spent time to knit, crochet and send us sea creatures. The project now has a new home on 129 Avenue.
Check out the video of the "installation" and a chat with Jesse about the project and Barb's secret ingredient (recommendation) for yarn that holds up to the outdoor elements. It's all in our Podcast On! Episode 104.
