It was a sweltering summer day, the kind that makes the city feel like a furnace. I was rushing to a meeting, my mind buzzing with deadlines and presentations. Then, a figure emerged from the shadows, a woman with a weathered face and eyes that held a quiet desperation.
"Excuse me, sir," she rasped, her voice weak. "Could you spare $0.86? I need to buy some medicine."
I was taken aback. $0.86. It was a paltry sum, barely enough for a cup of coffee. Yet, the way she held out her hand, the way her eyes pleaded, it was like she was asking for the world.
I dug through my wallet, finding some amount (total of $10) and handed it all over to her. As I handed it to her, she looked at me with a gratitude that went beyond words. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "You have no idea what this means to me."
That encounter stayed with me throughout my stay at the meeting. It was a stark reminder of the struggles faced by cancer patients, the everyday battles for survival cancer patients passes through. That night, I couldn't sleep, the image of that woman haunting my thoughts. I knew I had to do something, anything, to help.
The idea for the W10 World Campaign on Cancer was born. I envisioned a global movement, a network of over 10 million persons and supporters from all over the world that could offer resources and hope to those battling this devastating disease. And then it hit me "$0.86". That was the amount that had changed the life of that woman, even for a moment. It was a symbol of hope, of the power of collective action.
So, I decided to make $0.86 the membership fee for the W10 World Campaign on Cancer.
It was a symbolic gesture, a reminder that even the smallest contribution could make a difference.
