5 things you can do to adopt plant-based nutrition

As our society evolves, we are constantly faced with the need to change our behaviors and habits to increase our health and quality of life. We are now facing climate change, food insecurity and more than 40% of our population suffer from chronic diseases. One of the recent ideas put forward to improve our world and our health is plant-based nutrition.

Here are 5 things that can help you adopt plant-based nutrition.

Eat more fruits and vegetables
Eating plant-based means you have a large proportion of your food that comes from plant-based foods. That said, fruits and vegetables are often the number one thing that comes to mind when we think of plant-based nutrition.

Increase your fiber intake
Fiber lacks the nutrition of Americans. Fiber can be found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Target fiber-rich foods like black beans, bran cereal, or even broccoli.

Focus on plant-based protein.
Try changing the type of protein in your meals so that it comes from plants rather than animals. For example, make a salad with chickpeas instead of chicken or avocado instead of beef. This will not only help you cut down on your meat intake, but it will also help you not exceed the daily protein intake recommendation, as the average American eats twice the recommended daily intake.

Try new recipes
One of the most difficult parts of adapting to plant-based nutrition is adopting new cooking habits. It is highly recommended to try new recipes instead of trying to adapt your old recipes to plant-based nutrition. For example, a plant-based Mac and Cheese doesn't have the same flavor and texture as real things.

Don't be extreme
Plant-based eating can be for everyone, the main idea is not to "calm" or eliminate some of your nutrition, but rather to add more vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, and legumes. For those of you who love your steaks or burgers every now and then, you don't have to completely eliminate animal foods. You can certainly cut it down by making more plant-based meals.

Now is the time to put your learning into action. Slow and steady is a great approach to change habits. This is not a diet but a way of life, so have fun with it!
