Three in the morning and a freight train cuts through the dark — carrying names, faces, and everything grief can't say out loud.

Three in the morning. House is still. Then that hollow whistle rolls around the bottom of the hill and echoes off the canyon wall and suddenly it's carrying every name you haven't spoken in a while, every face you can still see clear as a country mile. It don't know it's doing it. It's just passing through. The Hollow Whistle is the closing track on Smoke Pipes and Open Sky — a haunting, cinematic slow burn about the sounds that reach down past everything you know, all the way to where you keep the things you'll never let go. Bagpipes enter like a second whistle answering from far away across the dark, two ancient voices calling to each other across the miles. The final note holds long and sustained — exactly like a train disappearing into the night — and then there is nothing but silence. That's the album. That's the whole ride. Worth every mile. - Original by Saddle Storms.

Lyrics: Three in the morning and the house is still Hear a freight train coming 'round the bottom of the hill That hollow whistle echoes off the canyon wall The loneliest sound God ever gave a soul to call It carries names I haven't spoken in a while Carries faces I can still see clear as a country mile It don't know it's doing it, it's just passing through But that lonesome whistle always finds the truth Some sounds reach down past everything you know Down to where you keep the things you'll never let go That hollow lonesome whistle in the night Cutting through the dark like a single shaft of light Carrying the weight of everything I've left behind That hollow lonesome whistle on the line Gone before you catch it, gone before you find Whatever it was calling out across the night That hollow lonesome whistle Lord it cuts right through There are people I have loved who rode that rail away People who came home and people who couldn't stay The whistle don't make judgments, don't keep any score Just rolls on through the darkness like it has before I have stood on platforms watching smoke go thin I have been the one who didn't come back again But tonight I'm lying still beneath this wide open sky And I let the whistle carry what I can't say goodbye Some sounds reach down past everything you know Down to where you keep the things you'll never let go That hollow lonesome whistle in the night Cutting through the dark like a single shaft of light Carrying the weight of everything I've left behind That hollow lonesome whistle on the line Gone before you catch it, gone before you find Whatever it was calling out across the night That hollow lonesome whistle Lord it cuts right through They say the whistle carries everything the road has seen Every mile of lonesome every somewhere that you've been Tonight it sounds like all the ones who went before Tonight it sounds like every open door Tonight it sounds like people I have loved Tonight it sounds like something from above And I swear it sounds like home Lord I swear it sounds like home That hollow lonesome whistle in the night Cutting through the dark like a single shaft of light Carrying the weight of everything I've left behind That hollow lonesome whistle on the line Gone before you catch it, gone before you find Whatever it was calling out across the night That hollow lonesome whistle Lord it cuts right through Lord it cuts right through Lord it cuts right through
