Continuing Education Course: An Introduction to Neurodiversity-Affirming Care for Therapists (1 CE)

Neurodiversity-affirming care has become an increasingly important framework for supporting autistic, ADHD, and other neurodivergent clients. Yet many mental health professionals received little formal training in how to translate affirming principles into everyday clinical practice. This introductory course provides an overview of neurodiversity-affirming care, including the differences between traditional deficit-based models and affirming approaches, the role of language, and the core principles that guide neurodiversity-affirming practice. Participants will explore practical strategies for creating more inclusive therapeutic environments, adapting interventions to better meet individual client needs, and supporting client autonomy and self-advocacy. The course also discusses the clinician's role in promoting neurodiversity-affirming practices within healthcare systems and concludes with resources for continued learning. Designed for mental health professionals seeking a foundational understanding of neurodiversity-affirming care, this course offers practical considerations that participants can begin incorporating into their clinical work.

This course consists of a 65-minute lecture for a total of one continuing education credit.

Presenter

Amy Marschall, PsyD is a licensed psychologist, author, speaker, and founder of Resiliency Mental Health and RMH Education. She specializes in neurodiversity-affirming assessment and therapy, with clinical expertise in autism, ADHD, and AuDHD across the lifespan. Dr. Marschall provides psychotherapy, psychological assessment, professional consultation, and continuing education for mental health professionals, with a focus on translating contemporary research into practical, evidence-informed clinical care.

Dr. Marschall has presented educational programs for organizations including PESI, Telehealth Certification Institute, Spring Health, and the Mind Body Training Institute. She is the author of Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy: What Every Mental Health Provider Needs to Know and writes extensively on neurodiversity, mental health, and psychological practice. In addition to her professional expertise, Dr. Marschall brings lived experience as an autistic and ADHD psychologist, informing her commitment to advancing neurodiversity-affirming, person-centered care.
