The Rottweiler is a large, powerful working dog breed originally developed in Germany to herd cattle and pull carts. Today, they’re widely used as guard dogs, police dogs, and loyal companions.


Appearance

  • Size: 80–135 lbs (36–61 kg), 22–27 inches tall (56–69 cm).
  • Build: Muscular, compact, and strong with a broad chest.
  • Coat: Short, dense, and black with clearly defined tan markings.

Temperament

  • Confident, intelligent, and very protective.
  • Naturally wary of strangers but deeply loyal to family.
  • Needs strong, consistent training and early socialization — otherwise, they can become dominant or aggressive.

Strengths

  • Excellent guard and protection instincts.
  • Very trainable if the owner is firm and experienced.
  • Loyal and affectionate with family, often forming strong bonds.

Challenges

  • Not a beginner’s dog — requires discipline and consistent handling.
  • Can be stubborn or territorial if not trained properly.
  • Needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation.
  • Some areas/countries have restrictions or bans on owning them due to their reputation.

Lifespan & Health

  • Lifespan: 9–10 years on average.
  • Common issues: Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, heart problems, and certain cancers.
