Modern edition of the lively "jácara" Al arma valientes, composed by Juan de Araujo (1646–1712), chapelmaster of the cathedral of La Plata (Charcas), in present-day Sucre, Bolivia. Araujo, originally from Spain, became one of the most celebrated composers of the Spanish-American Baroque, especially known for his villancicos, tonos, and polychoral music rich in rhythmic and harmonic vitality.
This piece is a festive and dramatic jácara for double choir (8 voices) and continuo, written in the spirited Iberian-American baroque style. The texture alternates between antiphonal exchanges and full ensemble sections.
