The samurai were the elite warrior and noble class of feudal Japan who ruled the military government from the 12th century until 1868. They bound themselves to Bushido, a strict ethical code requiring absolute loyalty, honor and bravery in the face of death. Alongside their mastery of the katana, these highly educated elites balanced rigorous martial training with refined cultural pursuits like poetry, calligraphy and philosophy.
