What begins as an investigation soon becomes captivity.
Alongside him are Zainab, a gifted seamstress carrying scars of her own; Ejiro, a seventeen-year-old girl whose age traffickers repeatedly rewrite; Monday, a young footballer chasing a European dream built on a fraudulent contract; Kel, an electrician searching for the brother who disappeared years earlier; Mariam and her young son Sule; and Idris, an ageing father who records the names of people the road is determined to turn into numbers.
Across holding houses, forced labour sites, desert settlements and Libyan compounds, Akin discovers a system built on deception, debt, violence and divided responsibility.
The recruiter stays safely behind.
The controllers never board the boat.
The prisoner becomes an enforcer.
The passenger becomes the pilot.
And by the time the Mediterranean rises above them, survival has become the only destination left.
