The Bay, Volume 1: Collected Letters & Journals of Richard Davis

'The Bay' is Volume I of the Collected Letters and Journals of Richard Davis from the period 1824-1830.

At this time Davis was trying to get access to land at Waimate to grow wheat, but was fobbed off initially , and tried growing wheat at Kawakawa instead. This was also a time when Hongi was fighting the last of his battles with Ngati Whatua at the Kaipara. Then, after Hongi was wounded in a skirmish at Whangaroa, coping with the rumours as to what would happen to the CMS Missionaries upon Hongi's impending death.

Davis also records the fact that he was stockpiling sawn timber, which he was going to be needing once he obtained the land at Waimate, to build houses and outbuildings, including for the Mill, for the 'model farm', which was his main purpose.
