Worked waist-down in the round, with optional German short rows for back length (full butt) adjustment, the Stumble Skirt is a lovely, full, stocking stitch skirt with a similar effect to a circle skirt. Flared at the hips and tied at the waist with an i-cord drawstring, this skirt is designed for and will fit a wide range of bodies.

Developed originally as a hack to turn my Tumble Tee pattern into a dress, I discovered it’s a real staple in its own right! It’s comfy, roomy, cosy, and super simple; I’ve also included instructions to do the dress hack if you want to! It can be made in any fibre depending on what look, feel and drape you want, but superwash merino always has a place in my heart! I hope you really like the skirt! I think it’s super wonderful.

CHOOSING YOUR SIZE:

Sizes 1 (2, 3, 4, 5) (6, 7, 8, 9) are designed to fit a waist measurement of 60 (70, 80, 90, 100) (110, 120, 130, 140)cm / 24 (28, 32, 36, 40) (44, 48, 52, 56)in and a hip measurement of 87.5 (97.5, 107.5, 117.5, 127.5) (137.5, 147.5, 157.5, 167.5)cm / 35 (39, 43, 47, 51) (55, 59, 63, 67)in. Choose the size that most closely matches your actual body measurement - see finished measurements section for more information. If you are working this as a hack for the Tumble Tee, work the same size. If you are between sizes, I think sizing up is best, because the waist can be tightened when you tie the drawstring. The waistband has some negative ease unstretched, but since it is ribbing it stretches a lot.

YARN:

For my block colour skirt sample, I used Qing Fibre Dashing Fingering (100% Ultra fine South African Merino, 400m / 437yds per 100g) in colourway Pufferfish. This is a superwash yarn, smooth, and with good drape. There is very little halo. You can use any 4ply/fingering weight yarn for different effects or use your scraps to make a stripey version like my dress sample! I would highly recommend experimenting with using contrasting colours for the waistband, i-cord, and trim as well!

If you plan to add short row shaping to the back, plan to use additional yardage:

For option 1: 65 (75, 80, 90, 100) (105, 115, 120, 130)m / 70 (80, 90, 95, 110) (115, 125, 135, 140)yds for 6.25cm / 2.5in adjustment
For option 2: 130 (145, 160, 180, 195) (210, 225, 245, 260)m / 140 (160, 175, 195, 215) (230, 250, 265, 285)yds for 12.5cm / 5in adjustment.

GAUGE:

21 sts and 28 rounds per 10cm / 4in in stocking stitch using 4mm / US 6 needle

NEEDLES:

– Main Needle - 4mm / US 6 circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge in your preferred lengths for skirt circumferences (I used 60cm / 24in length all the way through)

– Ribbing Needle - 3.25mm / US 3 circular needles or size needed to obtain gauge in your preferred lengths for waistband circumference (I used 60cm / 24in)

– For Folded Hem Waistband - spare 4mm / US 6 circular needles or
smaller - 60cm / 24in or longer circular needle

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

– Tapestry needle
– Stitch holders or waste yarn
– 1 Stitch markers (can be made from loops of waste yarn)
– If working Folded Hem Waistband - smooth 4ply/fingering weight
waste yarn in a contrasting colour for provisional cast-on
