Mastering Mood: Reading & Writing with Atmosphere
This two-page worksheet guides students through the analysis of mood, tone and literary devices before applying these techniques in their own writing. Using original passages (“The School” and “The Carnival”), students practise identifying imagery, simile, alliteration and personification, and compare how different authors create contrasting atmospheres. They then draw on these models to craft a short narrative of their own in either a bright or gothic style.
Designed for Years 7–10, this resource develops close reading, analytical writing and creative composition skills. It’s ideal for a short classroom task, homework or as part of a unit on narrative writing and literary techniques.
