When I first set out to write this book (late 2024), I did not imagine that it would end without a final resolution. But, that is the nature of history as it happens: it refuses to fit neatly into our plans. This work was born out of a simple but powerful need of mine, to understand.

To understand why Russia invaded Ukraine.



To understand how the world responded, how the battlefield evolved, and how nations and individuals were transformed by a war that few truly believed would happen and even fewer understood once it began.
