Fraction Tiles Board
A fraction board is a tool that helps you see and understand fractions.
It usually has shapes—like circles or rectangles—cut into equal pieces.
How to Explain It to Kids
1. Start with Something They Know
“Imagine a pizza! If we cut it into equal slices, each slice is a fraction of the whole pizza.”
2. Show the Whole
Point to the whole shape on the board:
"This is 1 whole. It means nothing is missing.”
3. Show Equal Pieces
Point to the pieces:
“This circle is cut into 2 equal parts.
Each part is called one-half or 1/2.”
Then show other boards:
3 pieces → thirds (1/3)
4 pieces → quarters (1/4)
4. Comparing Fractions
Let them place different pieces on the whole:
“Which is bigger: 1/2 or 1/4?”
Show that a 1/2 piece covers more space.
5. Building Fractions
Let them combine pieces:
“Two 1/4 pieces make a 1/2!”
(Show that the pieces fit exactly.)
This teaches equivalent fractions in a concrete way.
6. Fun Activities
Here are easy ideas for Grades 1–3:
Grade 1
Match pieces to the whole
Sort pieces from biggest to smallest
Grade 2
Build a whole using halves, thirds, and quarters
Compare fractions using the board
Grade 3
Find equivalent fractions
Mix pieces to make new fractions (e.g., 1/2 + 1/4)
