• identifying sources of evidence for the emergence of organised states (for example, the Cuneiform script phonetic writing of the Sumerians c.3500 BC (BCE)

This worksheet takes students through the development of writing in Mesopotamia. Students have an opportunity to consider early pieces of archaeological material that displays a primitive form of writing for agriculture before it developed into a proper script. They also have the opportunity to write in cuneiform and engage with one of the earliest examples of literature in the Epic of Gilgamesh.
