CHAPTER 6 (excerpt)

Drying without creating frizz

Earlier in chapter 5, I showed you how to build and release the cast. In this chapter, let’s look at why the drying stage is so important and how to avoid the common mistakes that lead to frizz.

Why the drying stage is so important

Many people think that styling ends once the products are applied. In reality, one of the most important parts of your entire routine is what happens while your hair is drying.

Think of your curls as being “under construction.” When your hair is wet, your curl pattern is still flexible. As it dries, your curls begin to set into the shape you’ve created during the application process. Every movement, every touch, and every disturbance during this stage can affect the final result.

Drying is not simply about removing water, it’s about allowing your curls to lock into their natural shape.

If your curls are constantly touched, scrunched, flipped, or disturbed before they’re ready, they may separate too soon, creating frizz, disrupting curl families, and shortening the life of your style.

Patience during the drying stage is one of the biggest secrets to long-lasting, defined curls.

Common mistakes that lead to frizz

Most frizz isn’t caused by your hair, it’s caused by what happens while your hair is drying.

Some of the most common mistakes include:

  • Touching your curls too often
  • Scrunching before the cast has formed
  • Moving the diffuser around too much
  • Using high heat or high airflow
  • Constantly checking or rearranging your curls
  • Running your fingers through the curls while they’re drying
  • Sleeping with damp hair

Every time you disturb your curls before they’re fully set, you’re interrupting the curl formation you’ve worked so hard to create.

The goal during this stage is simple: the less you touch your curls, the better they’ll reward you.

As we discussed earlier, both air drying and diffusing can produce beautiful curls. If you choose to air dry, don’t be discouraged if your curls look a little flatter at first. Once your hair is completely dry, gently break the cast, massage the roots, and give your curls a light shake. It’s amazing how much fullness appears. Diffusing simply speeds up that process and usually creates more volume from the very beginning.

Protecting your curls while you sleep is one of the easiest ways to preserve your definition and extend the life of your style.

Remember:

Think of wet curls like freshly poured concrete. Before it dries, every fingerprint leaves a mark. Once it’s fully set, it’s strong and holds its shape. Your curl cast works the same way.

Welcome to: Curls, Get Your Bounce Back!

Whether you're just discovering your curls or have been wearing them for years, I'm so excited you’re here!

This book was created to help you truly understand your curls, how they behave, what they need, and how to bring out the natural pattern that may have been hiding underneath frizz, dryness, or the wrong routine.

Together, we will go through everything from hair thickness, density and porosity, to understanding how those characteristics affect the products you choose, and how you apply them. We’ll talk about gels, mousse, curl creams, oils, and how to figure out what your hair actually responds to, instead of simply following what works for someone else.

We will also cover proper product application, diffusing, your morning routine, refreshing between wash days, what to do with second day and third day curls when they need a little help coming back to life, how to protect your curls when you sleep so they can last for days, and so much more.

Because everyone learns differently, you won’t have to experience this guide in just one way. You can read it, listen to the narrated audio version, and watch short instructional videos that demonstrate many of the techniques as we go.

My hope is that you’ll come back to this guide again and again, to reread a section, replay the audio, rewatch a technique, or simply remind yourself what your curls need that day.

There’s so much to learn about curly hair, but once you begin to understand your own hair, everything starts to make a little more sense. You are not required to follow every technique in this book. Adapt the methods to your individual hair, preferences, and needs.

Before we begin, here is a quick note:

The techniques and recommendations in this guide are based on my 30 years of professional experience working with curly hair. Every head of hair is unique, so results may vary from person to person. The information here is intended for educational purposes, and it is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Use your own judgment and choose techniques and products that work best for you.

Now, let’s get started!
