The Impact of Misdiagnosis on Autistic Clients (2 CEs)
Research indicates that autistic adults frequently experience delayed diagnosis and may receive one or more psychiatric diagnoses prior to identification of autism. Misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis can affect access to appropriate supports, treatment planning, self-understanding, and mental health outcomes. Accurate differential diagnosis is therefore an important component of evidence-based assessment and intervention with autistic clients.
This course reviews current research related to autism misdiagnosis in adults and examines factors that contribute to diagnostic confusion between autism and commonly co-occurring or overlapping conditions. Participants will evaluate clinical considerations relevant to differential diagnosis and review research on the impact of delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis on mental health outcomes.
In addition, the course explores trauma-informed and neurodiversity-affirming considerations when working with autistic clients who have experienced misdiagnosis. Topics include the psychological impact of diagnostic invalidation, barriers to appropriate support, and therapeutic approaches that may promote safety, trust, and client-centered care. Participants will evaluate evidence-informed strategies that may be incorporated into treatment planning with autistic clients who have experienced misdiagnosis.
This course is presented by an autistic psychologist and integrates both contemporary research and clinical considerations relevant to mental health providers working with autistic adults.
This course consists of a two-hour video, for a total of 2 CE credits.
