It moved through alleys and stairwells, across rooftop gardens and market lines. It rode freight elevators down into the underdistricts and climbed back up into penthouse hallways, changing shape each time it was retold.

Kayden felt it every time he stepped outside: eyes that lingered a little too long, commbands that rose to record, drones that hovered as if pretending they weren’t watching. People smiled at him in quick, private ways. Some nodded like they were part of a secret. Some looked away like hope was dangerous.

HelioDyne had called him a criminal.

But the lower districts had called him something else.

They had painted it onto walls in luminous ink that only showed under night-light:
