I first heard Hijinks performed with wind band and immediately thought it would work brilliantly for brass band, so I commissioned Anthony O’Toole to create a brass band version. (Please note that this is the piano reduction version - brass band version can be purchased here).

Hijinks means playful or mischievous behaviour, and that character runs throughout the piece. Quirky melodies, humorous interjections and plenty of personality make it a hugely entertaining showcase for the tuba. The cadenza takes things even further, with instructions including “bad quality trill” and “like a burp” — this definitely isn’t a solo that takes itself too seriously!

Behind all the fun, though, is a seriously demanding tuba part. Hijinks is written for the advanced tubist, requiring a high level of technical skill, flexibility and control, as well as a performer willing to really embrace its character. It is particularly well suited to final-year conservatoire/college recitals and professional recital programmes, where its technical demands, character and sense of humour can really come across.

A brilliant showpiece for anyone wanting to put the tuba firmly centre stage.
