The Dachshund is a small, long-bodied, short-legged dog breed originally developed in Germany for hunting badgers and other burrowing animals.
Physical Characteristics
- Size:
- Standard: 16–32 lbs
- Miniature: up to 11 lbs
- Height: About 8–9 inches at the shoulder
- Distinctive Features: Long torso, short legs, elongated muzzle, and expressive eyes
- Coat Types:
- Smooth (short, shiny coat)
- Longhaired (silky, flowing coat)
- Wirehaired (thick, coarse coat)
Temperament
- Intelligent, brave, and curious
- Known for being stubborn and independent, but affectionate with family
- Good watchdog instincts despite small size—alert and vocal
Lifespan
- Typically 12–16 years
Exercise & Care
- Needs moderate daily exercise despite short legs
- Prone to back issues (Intervertebral Disc Disease), so avoid excessive jumping or rough handling
- Coat care depends on type: smooth is low-maintenance, longhaired and wirehaired need regular grooming
Common Uses
- Originally bred for hunting badgers (“Dachs” means badger, “hund” means dog in German)
- Now mostly companion dogs, but still have strong prey drive
