The extra second is the crack. After it, inspection stops being a word that belongs to lockers. Hands learn heat. A mouth learns salt. A garage with the door half down learns the sound of a body arriving where it was not scheduled. They do not say they always wanted this. They say stay still and don’t leave that and lights out, because refusal would cost Cody the room and would cost Dale the last script in which he is still in charge of something.

A third person lives here. She works doubles. She asks, once, why the two of them have gone so quiet. The house gets smaller. A shop rag travels out of the secret and comes back folded, faintly marked, asking how long.

What remains is not exile. Dale keeps a scrap of command. Cody keeps the right to remain. Neither of them wants the same thing in the same way. The inspections lose their hour and become weather. The word still works.

Stay still.
