The Wind
A cierzo is a strong, dry wind that blows through the Ebro valley of Spain. Although more common in the autumn or winter it can happen any time of year ~ and so Cierzo, a little shawlette to help ward off its chill.
A little sister to the Winds of Change: Foehn shawl, this shawlette version is knit in Knit Picks Stroll Gradient – a lusciously soft next-to-the-skin creation. (see important gauge note below)
Cierzo is a heart-shaped shawl, knit from the bottom up, beginning with a Crochet Cast On (photo tutorial included). Stitches are decreased at the centre spine and outer edges to shape the shawl. Clever placement of the lace border pattern avoids a point at the spine - instead the points are offset on either side of the centre evoking a butterfly effect. A Double Drawstring Bind Off (photo tutorial included) is used to finish the top.
Two full sets of directions are included, one for chart users and a full set of written directions.
A table giving specific stitch counts is included as are two photo tutorials (for the Crochet Cast on and the Double Drawstring Bind Off).
Size:
Top edge: 46" / 117cm; centre back depth: 18" / 46cm; lower edge: 120" / 305cm.
Yarn:
458 yd / 419 m in Fingering weight
Needles:
4mm / US6 circular needle 32” / 81cm or size required to obtain gauge.
5mm / US8 crochet hook or two sizes larger than needle required for gauge (for the Crochet Cast On only).
Gauge:
It is important to match gauge exactly and consistently – the sample used all but 3.5yds / 3.2m of the 1 yarn cake. If in doubt, it is recommended that an extra cake be ordered; the matching colour end can then be used to finish the top of the shawlette.
Stockinette stitch: 24 sts and 31 rows over 4” / 10cm, blocked (washed and laid flat to dry).
Sundowner Chart 3 pattern: 8-stitch rep measures 1.75” / 4.5cm; 16-row rep measures 2.5” / 6.5cm, blocked.
Notions:
Stitch markers (removable and regular), pins for blocking, tapestry needle.
