The palmetto and gorget is the historic emblem used on the South Carolina state flag. Here’s what it means:
Palmetto Tree
- Represents the defense of Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island during the Revolutionary War (1776).
- The fort was built with palmetto logs, which absorbed British cannon fire and helped the defenders win.
- Became a symbol of resilience and independence for South Carolina.
Gorget (Crescent)
- The crescent shape on the flag is often misunderstood as a moon, but it’s a gorget, a piece of armor worn around the neck by soldiers.
- In the 18th century, the South Carolina troops wore blue uniforms with silver gorgets on their caps, which became an identifying mark.
- It symbolizes honor and defense.
