Birthing The Banned Puppies

It was an extremely odd situation I found myself in. Traveling overseas, I found myself face to face with a very rich business man in the hotel lobby.

It was an extremely odd situation I found myself in. Traveling overseas, I found myself face to face with a very rich business man in the hotel lobby.

At first I felt a bit of trepidation as I'd been traveling alone, but he quickly reassured me that he simply wanted to talk business.

Little did I know what that "business" entailed.

"How is your steak, ma'am?" He enquired. "Are you ready for more wine?"

The well-to-do gentleman had taken me out to the finest restaurant in the city and had reserved an entire room for just the two of us.

To say I was flattered would be the understatement of the century.

But the question of what he wanted hung heavily throughout the entire evening.

"Oh, the steak is lovely! But I think I'll take a rain check on the wine. It's delicious, but, you know..."

His steady blue eyes narrowed and he suddenly nodded.

"Yes, I do know. I can assure you I'm not here for...that." He said the word with a bit of distaste in his mouth.

I hadn't realized it up until that point, but I'd been holding my breath in. Now that at least I knew he didn't want "that," I could breathe a bit easier.

I leaned back in my very comfortable seat, dabbed the last bit of food from my lips and folded my arms across my chest.

"The night's getting away from us, Mr --"

"Phillip. Phillip K. Stevens. You may call me Phil."

"Okay, Phil. I don't think you brought me all the way here just to chit-chat."

He leaned back and steepled his fingers, a crooked smile crossing his craggy face.

"You're right. I'm not here for mere...chit-chat."

"What then?" My heart sped up and my mind whirled. What could a very well-to-do gentleman from the rich side of town want with a middle class 23-year-old?

My thoughts must've drifted off as he suddenly placed his hand on mine and leaned closer.

"I've been watching you..."

I smiled unsteadily. "I've heard better pick-up lines in a dive bar on a Saturday night."

He chuckled.

"Let me explain..."

"You want me to WHAT?" I blurted out, but he shushed me.

"I assure you I'll make it worth your while." He took a drink of his wine and smiled smugly.

It was the smile of a man who knew he could get anything he wanted.

Anything.
