James Kemp: Correspondence & Journals, 1823-1846
The Letters of James Kemp, one of the first CMS missionaries stationed at Kerikeri New Zealand, 1819-1846, plus his Journals , in seven parts, covering the period from 1823-1846
This is a collection of letters sent and received, and records of letters sent, by James Kemp, plus his Journals.
These have earlier been transcribed by unknown persons from MS held in the Hocken Library, and then converted into a searchable pdf, with a full index for all parts, created and curated by the use of Indexia software. I have discovered that although the Indexia software is a useful tool, it does not produce an index of the standard an academic indexer would produce, and I am therefore revising the index , and will ensure all updates are sent to those who purchase early versions.
James Kemp was a blacksmith, who emigrated to New Zealand on the General Gates in 1819, and eventually oversaw the erection of the stone store, and eventually occupied the first mission house, now known as the Kemp House, at the Kerikeri Basin.
These letters and Journals are a valuable primary source for anyone researching this period of our history.
