Hat Trick Hockey Socks
We love the infinite variability of the variegated colours in the special Hat Trick yarns, dyed by our friends at Ancient Arts in Calgary, Alberta. We never tire of seeing the patterning that evolves as you knit. Will you get diagonal swirls, helical or horizontal stripes or flashes of colour like lightening bolts?
Our “hockey sock” pattern comes in three basic sizes and uses three-by-one ribbing to give you as many “hat tricks” as possible! We like to carry the ribbing down across the top of the foot, as a way of making your socks fit a variety of widths. Keep your feet warm while you cheer on your team, whether at home or
rinkside.
Yarn: 1 skein of Hat Trick (80% superwash merino wool, 20% nylon;150g/510m per skein).
Needles: 2.5 - 2.75mm double pointed needles or size required to achieve gauge.
Gauge: 30 - 32 stitches over 10cm in stocking stitch
Sizes: Youth (6.5” ankle), Women (8.5” ankle) and Men (9.5” ankle). Measure the ankle just above the ankle bone.
Notes: You can adjust the size of the cuff and leg by adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of four. Or if you need a tighter fit, use a smaller (mm size) needle and for a fit with more give, try a bigger (mm size) needle. These adjustments will also affect the way the colours “play” in the patterning.
Our samples is knit in Hat Trick Montreal (same skein) from largest to smallest sizes, to give you an idea of the kind of pooling/patterning that occurs with different stitch counts.
